Interview with DaphneNg

:icondaphneng:

Could you describe yourself in a few words?
Spacey wacey, artsy fartsy, hermit crabsy (when the occasion suits me).

Down the dale, down the dell. [30/365] by DaphneNg

What does photography mean to you and how did you become a photographer?
Photography used to be a way for me to capture pretty things. I still capture pretty things today, except they are more than just a nice thing to look upon, depending on one's point of view. I picked up my first dSLR in 2009 after joining this online art community with stunning photographers and photos alike, and with the same line "I bet I can do this" like a broken CD stuck in my head, I started to build my own way into photography.

What does CONCEPTUAL mean to you?
It means a piece of work that was planned before or made out in a way to express a certain idea or concept. I use the term "concept" loosely though, most of my photos/concepts are built up as I go along. Sometimes when I dislike my original concept, I warp the idea into something else, and that works as well.

What inspires you?
Artists, photographers, fictional people, friends, the first light of the day that glows at 7.30a or the last dash of light at 7.30p

Which of your own work has the most meaning to you and why?
I think all of my work has different level of meanings, but none quite to the level of most-meaning-to-communicate-on-an-emotional-level... yet.

Whose work has influenced you most?
"I am the combined effort of everyone I've ever known." - Chuck Palahniuk
Let's just pin it down to I'm bad at choosing Most and Favourites.

Birds of the Same Feather [81/365] by DaphneNg

You are doing a 365 project at the moment. Why did you start it and how does it work so far?
I started my 365 this year's 1st January. Before that, I had a few months of holidays and I told myself I would pick up my camera and make things happen, but nothing happened. It was terrible, my friends started to notice and asked "hey, aren't you taking photos anymore?" and I would reply embarrassingly with "no", because what else could I say?

On New Year's eve (day), I decided to give myself a hard push and (just to see if I could do it) start a 365. I've heard a 365 isn't easy - sure, a photo a day for the whole year, but sooner or later work / college / university starts and life gets in the way - so there's the challenge. So far, I haven't yet missed a day, although sometimes I post late, but I still take photos every day. Some days are soddy, some days are wonderful, and as I type this I'm thinking about what should I do for tomorrow's 365

Who are your top 5 favourite artists? and why?
You know when someone asks you what's your favourite artist and straight away you forget every single artist that you've ever admired?

In no particular order:
- Brad Wagner:
His penchants for outdoor forest photography and interaction with nature photography always wows me.

- Lexi Mire
Her self portrait and symbolism photography lets you think. It's not mind boggling-ly deep or anything, but you stop and think about the creative process that went into making it.

- euclase
I love the fact that she puts so much effort into her realism pieces. It makes people look at the image, really look and marvel over it.

- Julia Wang
Her portraits don't boast of overly glamorous or pretty people, yet it makes the viewer look because it's beautiful in a whole way. (also I may be a bit age biased here, because she's the same age as I am but her photos are x2984924 worth staring at.)

- Kirsty Mitchell
Have you seen Kirsty Mitchell's work? She builds different worlds and photographs them at the same scale. The amount of time and effort used to make a photograph is mind-blowingly excruciatingly long and I admire her even more for that.

Hah my words don't do anyone justice, please google them and look your fill, you won't regret it. I'm holding back from adding so much more artists to this list...

Puff Herbal [94/365] by DaphneNg

Do you have any ambitious project?
Not as of yet. I do want to collaborate with other conceptual photographers though, but geographically it's always an issue.

Is there something else you want to say?
NEVER EAT YELLOW SNOW

Thank you so much for your valuable time and for being part of us.
